Spread the word, not an STD

April is National STD Awareness Month. I’m using this opportunity to share some important information, stats, and resources regarding sex and STDs. Please share this with the young people in your lives, and pass it on to parents with teens and tweens. If you’re reading this, I encourage you to get yourself tested. Yes, you!

1 in 5 people in the United States has an STD.

For some, talking with our kids about sex seems like a major challenge. For others, it’s something we discuss a little too late, perhaps after our kids have already experimented with sexual relationships or have experience with these issues firsthand.

Most STDs do not have symptoms.

Sure, we can hope that our kids just don’t have sex, but we can’t make that decision (or any others) for them. Giving them the right information, and the confidence to make healthy choices is the best we can do.

Condoms are the ONLY method that protects sexually active individuals from both pregnancy and STDs.

This weekend, on TLC, a new film airs entitled, Let’s Talk About Sex, a must-see film for all parents and those who care about the future and health of the next generation. Learn more about the film on the official website and please watch.

If you have a blog or way to share this info, I encourage you to check out the Bloggers Unite page dedicated to this very topic.

Let’s talk about sex.

  1. My daughter is only 15 months but my husband and I often talk about how we’ll handle the SEX talk when it’s time. My parent’s didn’t talk to me directly about it. My mom always told me she needed to talk to me about ‘something,’ but never got around to it. I think it’s important for us parent’s to realize that it’s our responsibility to teach our children about sex and everything it comes with. Great post and topic. Will definitely be Uniting! It’s worth the effort!

  2. Thanks, Angela. This topic is definitely not an easy one to talk about, with our partners or with our kids. Starting early, in my opinion, is the key to a healthy view of sexuality. Good luck with ‘the talk’ whenever the time comes.
