The classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood gets another modern update with the second installment in this animated series. Hoodwinked Too is not just for kids, in fact, there are so many references that appeal to adults that parents will enjoy this film as much as their children.
A scene straight out of The Silence of the Lambs delightfully surprises the adult audience and references to Scarface, Star Wars, Charlie’s Angels and, more obviously, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, keep moms and dads guessing what will come next.
References to social media show up as well when bloggers get a mention and one of the Three Little Pigs says, “I’m going to tweet about this,” after blowing up the trailer thought to belong to the Big Bad Wolf.
Brad Garett, best known for his role on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” is cast perfectly as the Giant and Andy Dick fits right in as Boingo the Bunny.
Glenn Close, Joan Cusack, and Heidi Klum make their wonderful characters come to life, as do Amy Poehler and Bill Hader, the voices behind Hansel and Gretel. These two are the center of the story as Red and the rest of the Happily Ever After Agency work to help rescue them from the witch who kidnapped them.
While laughter abounds from the audience throughout the film, some younger viewers might find the evil witch and the spider a big frightening. Personally, I couldn’t help but feel relieved by the fact that there was no love story unnecessarily thrown in as many other movies marketed to kids tend to do.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a third installment is made in this franchise. The writing and visual effects create a story that is unique, clever and entertains movie-goers of all ages.
