Fresh Air Friday
It’s June, the start of summer. Many kids are counting down the final days of school, which then leads to Summer Camp, summer vacations, beach days and spending time at the local pool.
For some kids, many who live in cities with skyscrapers and not so much green or fresh air, the idea of spending time outdoors over the summer is not a possibility.
Luckily for them, the Fresh Air Fund offers many opportunities to get city kids outside and into nature, but not without the help of generous and loving people who will open up their homes and their backyards over the next few months.
What do Fresh Air children enjoy?
- Playing in the backyard
- Laughing in the sunshine
- Catching fireflies
- Riding bicycles
- Learning to swim
- Running barefoot through the grass
- Gazing at the stars on moonlit nights
- Building sandcastles
- Making new friends
- Simple pleasures of life away from the inner-city
If your child has never experienced these things, you can sign him or her up for an amazing opportunity that will open up their world and allow them to explore different communities and enjoy nature in a whole new way.
If your kids enjoy these outdoor activities and would love to invite another child to enjoy nature along with them, you can sign up as a host family.
And if you’re not able to participate directly, there are other ways you can help. Spreading the word to other families is just one way, donating to this organization is another. These funds allow children to spend time at a summer camp away from home.
This Friday, and every Friday, I encourage you to enjoy some fresh air yourself. With or without your kids, getting outside and taking a few deep breaths helps reduce stress and brings you closer to Mother Nature, someone we all could benefit from spending more time with.
