Fatherhood: The Other F Word (Giveaway)

I have several tattoos, listen to angry music on occasion, and work hard at censoring myself in front of my children. I also drive a mini-van, so when I first received an email about a new movie coming out about punk rock dads, I was quite intrigued.

Some of my favorite bands were listed among the featured list of artists included in this new film, The Other F Word, and once I saw the documentary with my husband I fell in love with punk music all over again, along with feeling a greater appreciation for the fathers and musicians in the film who work and play hard, both off stage and at home.

Becoming a parent definitely changes your life. Becoming a parent after spending your youth rebelling against your own mom and dad, or coming to grips with the fact that your parents weren’t there for you, is another story entirely, one that the dads in The Other F Word know all too well.

The men in this film reveal great truths and sorrows about their childhood and the family life they never had, but are now making sure to provide for their own kids.

Through tears and sadness, beyond anger and loss, these dads display every emotion possible throughout their interviews, proving to their fans that despite their angry lyrics and regardless of how they appear, they are still pretty amazing fathers.

Tony Hawk, Flea, Jim Lindberg, Mark Hoppus, Art Alexakis, Josh Freese, and Rick Thorne appear in the film, along with about a dozen other musicians from bands such as Rise Against, Pennywise, Rancid, and several others you might recognize.

If you’ve ever questioned authority or wondered how your favorite artists balance life on the road with a stable family life, The Other F Word is a must-see movie – one of the best fuckin’ films I’ve seen all year!

  1. Flea saying, “My kids brought me life… they give me reason” is something I can resonate with. I grew up in various music scenes and rebelled harder than most. I was (and still am in many ways) very anti conformity… then I grew up, had kids and they changed me. When friends and family found out I was having my first child I was met with a lot of judgment and assumptions… no one thought I was going to be a great Mom because I was a rebellious kid. I proved them wrong. I love that these guys are proving the world wrong. Thank you for hosting this giveaway!

  2. This just hits so close to home. Coming from this lifestyle, trying to be a good example for your kids while trying to stay true to who you are is hard. Especially with the world frowning on what you look like and what you are doing whilst being a parent. I love that this movie was made.

  3. I admit, I am thinking of a pair of friends for this entry. Daddy has tattoos, listens to punk rock and has been a drummer for several bands… His exterior does not mTch the big sortie he is inside, and how he is with his daughter. He would really love watching this.

  4. daddy of two beautiful little girls, been listening to punk rock since i was 14 years old,now 30 year old. I would love to go see this movie with my wife (she also listens to punk). thanks

  5. I’m the punk who doesn’t want to grow up yet, still go to shows at any given day and not settle down with kids. I want to see how this changes the punk dads I have grown up watching my whole life. I want to see how this world changed one of my heros Fat Mike.

  6. My husband, who never likes to see movies, came home and said he wants to see this movie. After I picked my jaw off the ground, I looked it up and watched the trailer. I am so stoked that he is interested in seeing this movie because not only is he a huge punk fan, he is on the fence about having kids…this could be a good way to show him that life doesn’t stop with fatherhood. Help me to help him get a good look at the other F word, please!

  7. Been in the punk scene from Seattle and every stop in between and now in Long Beach. Now I am going to be a father in a few months and have been freaking out, when I saw the trailer for this film I knew I could do this. The thought of favorite punk legends (Lars fredeickson) being awesome dads, really made me feel connected. Can’t wait to see this movie.

  8. Okay , my flash back teenage mind is saying “hhhooottt” I can’t wait to see the guys I grew up with and their families. I remember seeing Blink 182 at a small coffee shop /stage in Capo Beach,( which is no longer there) over 15 years ago ,the place was shoe box but the show was amazing and they grew up to be one of the most popular bands in my years.
Jack Grisham is an inspiration to a good friend of mine. Tony Adolescent created a band that everytime I hear they are playing I’m thrilled to go see, especially when they are in SC.
Bro hymn, is what I want played at my wedding day for all my guy friends.
Rick Thorne is a talented BMX rider .
I’d be thrilled to win tickets and take 4 of my friends so we can relive our golden years .thx !

  9. I really want to see this movie for two reasons. First, I am a huge fan of many of the bands and musicians that are featured. Second, I recently remarried after being deforced for many years. My wife and I are planning on having children, even though my son from my previous marriage is almost 16! I’ve not got to see him much through the years (I was in the military) so I feel like I’m getting a second chance at being a father!

  10. I will be sending an email to the chosen winners and let you know how to claim your movie tickets. Thanks so much to everyone who commented!

  11. I grew up in the 90′s listening to Everclear’s “Father of Mine”, and “I Will Buy You a New Life” – both of which stories to my life. I believe that no matter how a person looks on the outside, whether it be piercings, tattoos, cut up sleeves, it doesn’t matter, what counts is the inside. And with that being said, I believe showing this film to a broad audience will bring some awareness and close the gap on naivety. Oh and I also have tattoos. :)
